"Spot Reduction" Can You Really Target Fat Reduction

As a weight loss and fitness coach I am often asked what is the most frequently asked question
                                                    Article continues below...

So, here it is:

“Can you give me an exercise to help me get rid of the FAT around my [???????]

Note: You fill in the [???????] eg abdomen, hips, thighs, butt, upper arms etc.

“If I could wave a magic wand to make 'spot reduction' of fat possible, I would be a very wealthy man!

Unfortunately, targeting fat burning to a specific area of the body is impossible. Our individual genetic make-up dictates where the fat comes off our body when we exercise or change our dietary habits.

The ‘Spot Reduction’ myth has been around for years. It seems so plausible. You know someone who used to have a fat tummy but since they have been doing all those abdominal crunches at the gym, as if by magic the fat is gone and you see lovely muscle instead.

It stands to reason; surely all those abdominal crunches have melted the fat from their abdomen? No they haven't. Impossible - Period!

What has happened in this example is that in addition to the 'abdominal crunches, this person has either done 'aerobic' exercise eg walking, running, rowing, or they have made changes to their dietary program or in all likelihood they have done both.

As a result fat has been burnt from around their body in general and that has included from around their abdomen".

in summary, they have great looking Abs because of a combination of aerobic exercise, changes to their dietary habits and lots of abdominal crunches. Sorry but there is no short cut!
